Introduction
  • National Research Safety Headquarter is responsible for the evaluation and management of biological safety under the act for the establishment of a safe laboratory environment and the transboundary movement, etc. of the Living Modified Organisms Act. Further, the center contributes to the prevention of accidents at laboratories and improvement of R&D productivity, by establishing a professional and systematic safety management system within domestic laboratories.

  • LMO policy
    • Promoted a positive administration to cope with administrative burden of research site before the law revision
    • Revised the integrated notification for the LMO Act, to reflect changes in the recent research environment
    • Published four guidelines for safety management of Experiment/ Research LMO(animals, plants, insects, and fishes)
    • Published a compilation of risk review and cell line guidelines for biological risk management
    • Published a handbook on LMO safety management

    • Implemented LMO safety education for experiments/research (130 training sessions completed by 26,690 people, including online course sessions)

    • Revision of Act on the Establishment of Safe Laboratory Environment for the Mitigation of Safety Regulations in the Laboratory(Jan. 2020)
    • Operation of a system for certifying exemplary laboratories in safety management (obtained certification : 138 laboratory)
    • Promotion of projects to create and improve safe laboratory environments(930 million Korean won for 30 organizations)
    • Publish guidelines for handling and managing major equipment for safe use of research equipment and safety management guidelines for electrochemical fields with high risk of accidents
  • Laboratory education and training
    • Conducted laboratory safety education and training for those who demanded it to be carried out (classroom education: 110 times for 9,331 audiences, online education for 456,511 people)
    • Enhancement of the education program for the laboratory safety management committee through the introduction of the role of the committee and incident response education
    • Development of On-line educational content customized for the safety-weak classes(new researchers, etc.)and medical researchers
  • Laboratory inspection
    • Approval of National Approval Statistics from the Statistics Korea about the survey on the status of laboratory safety management(Approval No.127015, 2019)
    • Conducted field inspection to assess laboratory safety management (500 organizations /2,078 sample inspection laboratories)
    • Managed laboratory accident statistics (317 cases, as of ¡¯19), conducted 21 accident investigations (8 field inspections, 13 document investigations)
    • Publish guidelines for accident cases that reflect major accident cases by field of research
