2017(2016~2017) Korean Biomedical Scientist Fellowship Program (KBSFP) Call for Applications 2017(2016~2017) The National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States Department of health and Human Services and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) of the Republic of Korea offer fellowship award to support biomedical research projects undertaken in NIH laboratories by early-stage Korean postdoctoral researchers in a collaborative training program called Korean Biomedical Scientist Fellowship Program (KBSFP). KBSFP is open to candidates who received their doctorate degree and whose research focuses on any field related to biomedical and behavioral research. The candidates must presently be, or have a commitment to be appointed as Supplemental Visiting Fellows to conduct research at an NIH Institute or Center. ▶ Eligibility - To be eligible for the KBSFP, candidates must have successfully obtained their doctorate degree (i.e. Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.V.M. or equivalent) as of June 30, 2016. Upon arriving at NIH, the candidate’s doctoral degree cannot be more than five (5) years ago as of January 1, 2017(i.e. doctoral degree must have been received between January 1, 2012 – January 1, 2017). Applicants who acquired whole their academic degree (bachelor, master, and doctorate) outside of Korea cannot participate in the program, at least one degree must have be earned at a Korean university. - Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the Republic of Korea. U.S. citizens and U.S permanent residents are not eligible to apply. - Applicants must meet all other eligibility requirements as described in NIH Manual Chapter 2300-320-03 – Intramural Visiting Fellow Program., http://oma1.od.nih.gov/manualchapters/person/2300-320-3/). ▶ Selection and Financial Terms - Approximately five (5) fellowships will be awarded in 2016 but possibly fewer depending upon quality of the application and funding availability. - Maximum stipend of 65,000,000 KRW (approximately $57,000 USD) will be granted to each fellow up to 24 months starting on January 1, 2017. Fellowship stipend will be paid in Korean Won and duration cannot be less than 24 months. - Each NIH Institutes/Center must add funds to supplement the KBSFP stipend in order for fellows to be Supplemental Visiting fellows as required by the Program. - KBSFP fellowship funds will be paid directly to the selected applicant by wire transfer if already at NIH or via an affiliated Korean organization if applicant is currently working in Korea. - Award of KBSFP fellowship is contingent upon the applicant’s ability to receive approval by the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security of his/her entry in to the United States under a work authorized U.S. immigration status. - Once selected, applicant cannot receive any other governmental research funds from the Republic of Korea during the period of training. ▶ Application and Submission - Each application should contain the following:▪ A letter of application including curriculum vitae ▪ An original copy of certificate or diploma of doctoral degree ▪ Transcripts from the courses taken during bachelor, master, and doctorate program ▪ A research statement containing past research results during the doctorate program ▪ A research proposal which includes a future commercialization plan, if applicable ▪ A letter of invitation from the sponsoring NIH mentor (Principal Investigator) The complete application package should be submitted to: http://equip.kribb.re.kr/recruit/notice2/end_view.aspx?tmp_no=104 ▶ Obligations - Selected applicant must devote themselves exclusively to their research at NIH during the tenure of their fellowship - Selected applicant cannot stop training arbitrary except in case of exceptional reasons beyond the trainee’s control. In such case, one must report to NIH and MSIP, and obtain MSIP’s approval accordingly.
